iPhone joins the prepaid ranks

Cricket Wireless is certain to make itself a fan of techies who don’t like contracts, because it will soon be offering the iPhone on a prepaid basis.  Of course, there is a catch, and that catch is you have to buy the iPhone from Cricket, and at full price, for either $400 or $500, depending on which model you choose. For $55 a month, you get unlimited voice, text and data, although yet another catch is that “unlimited” truly isn’t unlimited when it comes to data.  What they mean to say is that you’ll need to observe a 2 GB [...]

Virgin Mobile starts to roam

0 comments // in News // May 29, 2012

Virgin Mobile will be offering roaming as part of its overall service package starting in July, according to reports. It’s unclear whether there will be any fees for the service, and if so, what the charges will be, but what is clear is that Virgin Mobile is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the cell phone market. It’s not known yet what networks Virgin Mobile will enter into roaming agreements with, but this is welcome news for anyone who has found trouble connecting through the service, which primarily uses Sprint’s towers. Without the roaming, Virgin Mobile customers [...]

No more prepaid stigma

0 comments // in News // May 26, 2012

It used to be that prepaid cell phones were strictly for “poor” people, or those who couldn’t get credit.  That simply is no longer the case. Prepaid phone service is a win-win for everyone.  The customer wins, because they don’t have to sign a contract, and they can control their costs, avoiding surprise overage charges for using too many minutes, or too much data. The companies win, because they have long-term customers who aren’t as likely to bail. Surprisingly, between 20% and 30% of cell phone users are prepaid users (and 90% of households in the United States have at [...]

Some Appeal for AT&T customers

0 comments // in Phones // May 24, 2012

AT&T Wireless is adding another option for its Go Phone customers: the Samsung Galaxy Appeal.  Although it is  a small phone with largely unimpressive features, it is an Android device, and yet another way for prepaid customers to join the mighty ranks of Android users. One feature that sets the Appeal apart from other Android devices is the fact that it has a standard QWERTY keyboard, making it one of the few smartphones to have such a feature, which has largely gone the way of the 8-track player, in favor of virtual keyboards. Thanks to AT&T’s GoPhone plan, voice and [...]

Voyager Mobile has problems with launch

0 comments // in News // May 17, 2012

With promises of $19 prepaid plans, Voyager Mobile was destined for success.  However, one price of success is growing pains, as the company found out on its launch day on May 15. An attack, apparently a packet-based DDOS attack, on its website caused the company to take the site offline, a move that is still in effect as of the time this article was published. “Due to the network outage, Voyager Mobile is postponing its launch to a time and date in the very near future,” a statement on the site reads. The statement also read, “Our goal of low [...]

Go unlimited with AT&T

0 comments // in Phones Plans // May 12, 2012

AT&T Wireless is perhaps one of the oldest wireless companies, and like many others, they have an attractive choice for prepaid customers who seek an unlimited option. Like Verizon Wireless, AT&T offers unlimited talk and text for $50, and they take it one step further by offering unlimited data, too.  Of course, they offer other prepaid options, and those will be examined in a later post. The unlimited option is a wise choice for someone who does not have a landline phone, or someone who gets a lot of use out of their phone.  The prepaid option is good for [...]
